I know it's annoying but may I ask what camera you use?
I use a canon 50D, it's about a level above the canon rebels and if you have the cash, I'd say go for it. 60D from what I heard isn't a major improvement, and 40D is not any worse than the 50D. 7D is loads better and if you have the cash for THAT, i'd say go for it 100% and you can get nice lenses eventually.
I'm definitley going to look into the 40D and 50D (:
